Department of Study of Religions

Department of Study of Religions

Our department was established in 2011 with its initial name Daʿwa and Comparative Religion. This initial form continued for 9 years until the Senate committee of DHIU suggested the removal of the term Daʿwa from the name in a meeting held in (month) 2020. It was argued that the term and its meaning (preaching of Islam) is a general theme and part of the mission of DHIU and, therefore, the same cannot be reduced to the scope of a single department.  This ended up in naming the department as dept. of Comparative Religion. Maintaining the phrase ‘comparative religion’ was also challenged in another Senate meeting held in 2020 (month) because it stood for the evolutionary paradigm of studying the religion that was inspired by the European enlightenment values. Department of Study of Religions, a further advanced expression that marks the post enlightenment methods of studying religion was proposed instead. The department offers areas like history theology and philosophy of religions. It also contains both medieval Muslim approaches and modern theories of studying the religions. Studies of the trends of religious pluralism and interfaith dialogue are also offered by this department.
