Prof. Dr. Bahauddeen Muhammed Jamaluddeen Nadwi

Prof. Dr. Bahauddeen Muhammed Jamaluddeen Nadwi is the founding Vice Chancellor of Darul Huda Islamic University. One of the most influential 500 Muslims of the world, he has authored and translated many books in various Islamic disciplines and has delivered lectures around the globe. He holds memberships in national and international organizations including the International Union of Muslim Scholars. Currently, he is the General Secretary of Samastha Kerala Jam'iyyathul Mu'allimeen Central Council, a supreme council of religious teachers in Kerala.

He was born to Muhammed Jamaluddeen Musliyar and Fathima Hajja on 22 April 1951 (15 Rajab 1370 A.H) at Kooriyad, Malappuram, Kerala. The scholarly lineage of his family hails from his father, a well-known Sufi scholar and his maternal grandfather Sheikh Zainuddin bin Ahmed alias Thenu Musliyar, a popular Sufi of the 20th century Malabar.

After his early education, in 1972 he got enrolled in Jamia Nooriyya Arabiyya, the premier higher institution of Islamic religious learning in Kerala, and completed the course with the honorary title of Moulawi Fazil al-Faizy. He completed the degree of Afzal al- ‘Ulama’ from University of Calicut in 1979 and a Diploma in Arabic Language Teaching from the government of Kerala in 1971.

At his thirty, he moved to north India to pursue higher studies and got enrolled in Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, one of the earliest prestigious Muslim seminaries in India, and achieved ‘Alimiyya’ degree in Arabic Language and Islamic Studies. From the Nadwa itself, he was awarded the Fazeelath (Master’s) degree in Islamic Studies. Later on, he also obtained another master's degree in Arabic Literature from Aligarh Muslim University in 1987. His first international educational trip was to Al-Azhar University Egypt to pursue an advanced diploma in Islamic Preaching.

In 1993, he got Ph.D. from the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, University of Calicut. Three years later, the University also awarded him the Post-Doctoral Fellowship.

Dr. Nadwi has been honored with many national and international awards and felicitations. In 2003, he was selected as a Participant in the International Visitor Program organized by the US Department of State. In 2006, he was elected as a Participant for the Dubai Holy Qur’an Award Speeches organized by Dubai Government. In 2009, he was invited to Emirates as the Ramadan Guest of H.H. the President of UAE. For decades, he has been officially participating in different academic seminars, symposiums and workshops in various countries.

Services

Dr. Nadwi is regarded as one of the six founding fathers of the then Darul Huda Islamic Academy (DHIA). Since inception of DHIA, he held the post of Vice Principal and when the Academy was upgraded to be the ever-first Islamic University in South India, he was appointed as the first Vice Chancellor. Integrating Islamic higher education with the secular, he devised, designed and implemented a comprehensive curriculum in the University.

He has been an active member of different organizations and Islamic colleges and a pioneer of a number of academic initiatives, religious and social movements across India. In 2011 he was elected as the member of International Union of Muslim Scholars based in Qatar. He is the current Secretary General of All Kerala Mu’allims' (Teachers) Federation and the Executive Member of National Monitoring Committee for Minorities Education, a constitutional board under the ministry of HRD, Govt. of India.

Prof. has published more than 50 works including books, treatises, edited volumes and translations in Arabic, English and Malayalam languages. His works remark a vast and wide aspect of Qur'anic Sciences, Islamic Jurisprudence, Prophetic Hadith, Educational system, Sufism, Comparative Religions, Christianity, Arabic Language and Literature, Islamic History etc. He has translated many Arabic Classical texts into Malayalam.

He has delivered a number of religious, academic and cultural lectures; initiated and participated in many academic, cultural and religious seminars and conferences around the globe. The important of them are:
